I really enjoyed comedian Taylor Tomlinson’s new Netflix special “Look at You”. I had watched her previous special “Quarter Life Crisis” and I think her content and voice have really grown.
She begins this current special revealing to the audience her recent diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Throughout the course of her special, she details childhood trauma, her dating and sex life, and her experience with suicide hotlines with such humor, depth, and keen observations.
As mental illness becomes more and more accepted, I find myself eager for content about bipolar people, particularly women. Actual representations that reflect our humanity and fullness of our experience feel so rare. I feel like Taylor really succeeds in this aspect with her hilarious special.
I felt so in tuned with her material this round. She went over the difference between “I am bipolar” and “I have bipolar disorder” with such wit and biting insight. She reveals personal details of her life like any comic does but this time it felt like she was more honest about who she is/is becoming and allowing the audience to vividly see a real and true aspect of her story.
The hour was wonderful and I highly recommended it for mature viewing content.
